The United Arab Emirates has successfully launched the SEO satellite into space aboard a Long March 2C carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in China. The satellite, developed by the National Space Science and Technology Centre, will provide data to support environmental protection, natural resource management, planning, and decision-making.

The project is part of the Centre’s efforts to expand national space projects and strengthen UAE capabilities in the space sector. The SEO mission will support scientific research and technology applications related to sustainability and future development.

Data provided by the satellite is intended to support four areas identified by the National Space Science and Technology Centre. The mission forms part of efforts to develop UAE capabilities in the space sector and expand the country’s work in science, technology, and innovation.

The National Space Science and Technology Centre is based at the United Arab Emirates University. The project is also intended to develop national talent by giving Emirati researchers and engineers practical experience in the design, development, and operation of satellites.

Salem Al Qubaisi, Director-General at UAE Space Agency, said the successful launch was in line with the UAE’s vision and National Space Strategy to strengthen the country’s position among global leaders in the sector. He said the mission highlighted the importance of cooperation between national and academic institutions in building an advanced space ecosystem and developing Emirati capabilities.

Dr. Nabil Mohammed Al Bastaki, Director of the National Space Science and Technology Centre, said the SEO project is part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to advance national space projects and strengthen UAE capabilities. He said the project also provides researchers and engineers with practical expertise in satellite design, development, and operations.
