Workers rescued from meat grinders in Dubai

Dubai Police have rescued several workers whose hands became trapped in commercial meat grinders in a series of accidents across the city.

The incidents occurred in shopping centers and restaurants, where conventional medical tools were unable to safely release the trapped workers. According to the report, Dubai Police had to use specialist equipment to minimize injuries to the victims.

Colonel Khalid Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Director of the Search and Rescue Department, said these types of incidents are typically caused by factors ranging from inattention, inadequate training, or unsafe use of industrial machinery.

Dubai Police used precision cutting tools and engineering expertise to rescue the workers. In one challenging case, a worker had become trapped inside a meat grinder, and doctors initially diagnosed that his hand would need to be amputated to save his life.

Rescuers were able to free his hand by reversing the grinder’s mechanism, limiting the damage to part of his fingers.

This rescue was particularly notable, given the severity of the situation. The use of specialist equipment and expertise allowed Dubai Police to rescue the workers with minimal injury, which shows their training and preparedness.

They have issued an appeal to employers across the city to ensure workers receive adequate safety training and that machinery is fitted with protective features and devices.

This warning comes following a series of decisions by Dubai courts, which have awarded substantial compensation in workplace injury cases, such as a restaurant worker whose hand was amputated after becoming trapped in a meat grinder, who was awarded $136,147 (AED500,000) in compensation.

In another case, a worker who lost two fingers in a steel-bending machine accident received $19,060 (AED70,000) in damages, highlighting the importance of prioritizing worker safety and providing adequate training and equipment.

Dubai Police’s rescue efforts and the courts’ decisions serve as a reminder of the need for employers to take workplace safety seriously and provide their employees with the necessary training and equipment to prevent such accidents, which can have a significant impact on individuals and communities.
