Dubai skyscrapers reach new heights

Dubai’s skyline is dotted with skyscrapers, including the iconic Burj Khalifa, the tallest in the world at 828 metres.

However, it won’t be the tallest for much longer, as Jeddah Tower is set to overtake it when completed in August 2028 at a height of 1,000 metres.

The Jeddah Tower project was paused for several years but resumed construction in 2025.

Dubai’s Skyscraper Boom

Towering skyscrapers have become the norm in major cities in the GCC, especially in Dubai, over the last decade.

Jeddah Tower is just one of five mega skyscraper projects currently under construction across the Gulf, with four of them in the UAE.

Dubai’s Burj Azizi is expected to be completed in 2028 and will stand at 725 metres with 125 floors.

It will be a mixed-use building for residential and hospitality space, similar to Jeddah Tower.

Other Notable Projects

The Burj Binghatti Jacob & Co Residence is another Dubai project, expected to open in 2027 as a residential-only tower.

It will be one of the world’s largest residential towers, standing at 595 metres with 103 floors in Business Bay.

Tiger Sky Tower, also in Business Bay, will be slightly smaller at 532 metres with 116 floors and is expected to be completed in 2029.

Dubai Marina will get a new addition with the Six Senses Residences in 2028, a luxury residential building at 516 metres with 125 floors.

This project replaces the former Pentominium and is being developed by Select Group with a total of 251 units.

Comparison to Other Cities

While Dubai’s skyscraper setting is unique, other cities have also seen significant developments in recent years, with some projects facing similar challenges and delays.

For instance, the list of tallest buildings in the world has been constantly evolving, with new projects being announced and completed regularly.

However, Dubai’s consistent pursuit of innovative and record-breaking projects sets it apart from other cities.

In terms of numbers, the current skyscraper projects in Dubai are expected to add thousands of new residential and commercial units to the city’s inventory.

For example, the Burj Azizi will have 125 floors, while the Tiger Sky Tower will have 116 floors.

These numbers demonstrate the scale and ambition of Dubai’s skyscraper projects.

The city’s ability to attract investors and developers to undertake such large-scale projects is evidence of its strong economy and business environment, which is also reflected in its trade record with new global deals.
